Abstract: this study makes a review of the analysis and interpretations of the diminutive in portuguese, recovering the vision of soares barbosa (1789), obliterated by most of the analysis of the last century. taking this point of view as reference, the hypothesis that guides this analysis, which is based on the optimality theory, is that -inho is the morpheme; and z in -zinho, an epenthetic consonant. considering the morphological word as base of the derivative and a ranking of correspondence, markedness and alignment constraints as the instrument of analysis, the explanation comes out firmed on the theory and on the data.

Abstract: the aim of this paper is to show that portuguese has two processes of nasalization, operantig in separate levels, the lexical one that originates the diphthong and the postlexical that originates the nasal vowel. in the formation of the diphthong, the stability effect, a local condition, is the fundamental point as the assimilation is, as spreading, for the nasal vowel.

Abstract: the phonological system of brazilian portuguese has two rules of neutralization in favor of high vowels and not three, as it has been postulated. the asymmetrical subsystem of four pos- tonic vowels in non-final position is only an effect of frequency, for both middle vowels /e, o/ are shown to be sensitive to raising. it seems to be a case of expansion of the minimum system of three vowels which, in search of regularization, causes variation between two subsystems, the one with five and the one with three vowels. this paper is developed in the non-linear framework and the data are results of variable rule analysis.
