%X in the present paper the most general aspects of the characterization of the erbium doped fiber amplifier (edfa) are exposed; with the purpose of providing a theoretical base for the understanding of the different phenomena that take place inside of the amplifier when it¡äs used like physical medium for the amplification and propagation of optical pulses and thus to determine how these pulses are affected, due to the appearance of different dispersive and nonlinear phenomena.
