%X this article broaches the relationship between the £¿ideological narrative£¿ of the bolivarian revolution and the construction of hegemonies and counter-hegemonies in venezuela. this ideological narrative of emancipation articulates the notions of £¿genuine roots£¿, `general will£¿ and the search for the £¿common good£¿, in the building of a projected hegemony. the author adopts the contribution of the theory of discourse in order to analyze £¿revolutionary populisms£¿ in latin america and, in particular, in venezuela. moments of inflexion in ch¨¢vez£¿s discourse are identified and special attention is given to the emphasis on the £¿leader£¿ from 2004 on, in redefining the scope of the project, its rhythms and its priorities in the transformation towards a £¿21st-century bolivarian socialism£¿`. at the same time, the article underlines the difficulties encountered when attempting to overcome the legacy of the bureaucratic-despotic socialist models.
