%0 Journal Article %T Representaci¨®n del Caribe en libros de texto de primaria venezolanos %A Arteaga Mora %A Carmen G %A Alem¨¢n Guill¨¦n %A Pedro J %J Revista de Pedagog¨ªa %D 2007 %I Scientific Electronic Library Online %X this work presents partial results of a study on social representations in venezuelan primary school texts adapted to the current official program. in particular, it deals with how the caribbean region is represented in such texts from the ethnic, cultural and political points of view. it also discusses the treatment given to caribbean history and how this is related to venezuela. the study is based on the idea that educational institutions are potential vehicles for the transmission of ideological and cultural patterns, and that textbooks often present an £¿official cosmovision£¿ in which our views on society and the world itself are molded from and by the center of political power, that is to say, the state. methodologically, the study is based on critical discourse analysis through which the role of written language is analyzed, in this particular case concentrating on social interaction and the formation of power relationships through the transmission and reproduction of systems of belief and knowledge. implicit to this methodology is the notion that discourse is not neutral, but quite the contrary, being as it is ideologically biased. %K discourse analysis %K textbooks %K latin american identity %K the caribbean. %U http://www.scielo.org.ve/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&pid=S0798-97922007000300002&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en
