PM pollution with high concentration levels in Chinese cities mostly originates from coal combustion, vehicle exhaust and open sources, which is different from those in Europe and US. Previous studies found that both short-term and long-term exposure to particulate matter resulted in various adverse health effects. This review summarized the major study methods and progress of the health effects of PM through comprehensive studies in environmental science, exposure science, environmental epidemiology, and environmental toxicology, which aims to offer the reference to studies of PM health effects and the revision of environmental air quality standard in China. At present in China, PM10 pollution has not been effectively controlled, and the fine particle (PM2.5) begins to raise public concern. Systematical studies concerning the health effects caused by PM pollution need to be conducted in different areas in China. %K ambient particulate matter (PM) %K health effects %K environmental epidemiology %K environmental toxicology
