Kasianenko %J Economics of Development %D 2012 %I Kharkiv National University of Economics %X At the present stage of its development, economic science is trying to reveal the internal driving forces of economy, the factors and reserves of significant qualitative growth, to study the world management experience as a prerequisite of further rapid development of our society. Owning to this, an immediate methodological problem that lies in the identification of the ways of assured and the most efficient acceleration of social and economic development arises. Considering the above-mentioned, the research of the formation, usage and evaluation of economic potential becomes actual.The concept of potential was studied by such prominent scholars as L. Abalkin, I. Ansoff, K. Voblyi, G. Kleiner, G. Markuze, B. Mochalov, O. Oleksiuk, O. Toffler, O. Fedonin, T. Khramtsova and others. However, the previous acquaintance with the works of the specified authors allows to speak of a certain ambiguity of opinions about the interpretation of the concept of potential and its examination from various angles.On the base of the review of scientific papers, the author systematizes the guidance approaches to the definition of the concept of potential and specifies their advantages and disadvantages. It allows examining its essence more thoroughly and choosing the most meaningful approach to the interpretation of the concept of potential.In the research the author summarizes the existing guidance approaches to the definition of the concept of potential and singles out a number of the ones: resort (in its narrow and broad sense), probabilistic, resulting, structural, special and resulting-probabilistic approaches. The distinction of these approaches is carried out according to the criteria of taking into account the basic characteristics of the studied categories in the definition including resources (existing or potential), the possibility of achieving the effect, the factors of potential formation, the ability to develop and the degree of capacity of resources and opportunities.
