%X Este art赤culo analiza la pol赤tica ling邦赤stica del imperio espa ol en Am谷rica. Se describen la desidia educativa que determin車 el masivo analfabetismo del final del per赤odo colonial, la conservaci車n de las lenguas amerindias para los usos religiosos y la creaci車n de una sociedad letrada que defini車 de una vez para siempre la supremac赤a del castellano como veh赤culo de la alta cultura. Este proceso produjo la aniquilaci車n cultural de las civilizaciones ind赤genas porque no solamente se quemaron los c車dices y otros documentos precolombinos, sino que tambi谷n se ocultaron y prohibieron las precoces y brillantes traducciones que conten赤an la historia de los pueblos originarios de Am谷rica. The present article analyses the linguistic policy of the Spanish empire in America. It describes the neglect of education which resulted in massive illiteracy at the end of the colonial period, the continued use of Amerindian languages for religious purposes and the creation of a literate society which determined once and for all the supremacy of Spanish as the vehicle for high culture. This process brought about the cultural annihilation of the indigenous civilizations because not only were the codices and other pre-Colombian documents burned, but also the brilliant early translations containing the history of the original peoples of America were suppressed and banned.
