%0 Journal Article %T Physical activity as an important factor in preventing osteoporosis %A Slavica Babi£¿ %A Stjepan Jelica %A Josip £¿ubari£¿ %A Mirsad Muftic %J South Eastern Europe Health Sciences Journal %D 2013 %I %X Aim Beside its educative aspect, this study aimed to point outthe possibilities in suppression of osteoporosis through physicalactivity.Methods 25 osteopenia patient were included in the study.The patients were advised to undertake regular physical activityconsisting of the therapeutic exercises combined with thePilates exercises. First, an estimate of the physical condition ofthe subjects was made and an appropriate physical exercise programwas formulated for each patient. The patients executedthe assigned exercise program three times a week for 45 minutesfor 12 months, after which period the HAQ questionnairewas re-administered.Results At the start 68% subjects had significant difficultieswith getting up, walking, performing household chores andmaintaining hygiene. The remaining 32% required assistanceto perform the above activities. Of 17 (68%) subjects with significantdifficulties with getting up, 14 (56%) improved tobe able to perform the activity independently. Of 24 (96%)subjects with significant difficulties with maintaining hygiene,at the end 8 (32%) were able to perform the activity withoutany difficulties. Of 18 (72%) subjects that had difficulties inperforming the everyday household chores, at the end 7 (28%)were able to perform the activities without any help. Of the18 (72%) subjects with significant difficulties with walking, 7(28%) were able to perform the activity without difficulties atthe end of the study.Conclusion Physical activity is an important factor in preventionof osteoporosis.
