Gavekar %J International Journal of Knowledge and Research in Management and E-Commerce %D 2011 %I RG Education Society %X Imagine a Citizen who can log onto one internet web site 24 X 7 days a year to easily find the government services they are looking for, and use that site to conduct an online transaction. He can fill out the internet form for all their local, state and federal environmental regulatory compliance requirements and government officials make all purchases & payments electrically by saving time and money. The technology for all these applications is nothing but the ¡°e-governance¡±. e-governance is use of Information Technology (IT) to enhance the access to and delivery of government services to benefit citizens, business partners and employees. With the advent of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken major initiatives towards the use of IT in all of its processes and started e- governance services with their motto ¡°e-governance-to serve citizens better¡±. Pune Municipal Corporation includes online birth/death certification as well as pending certificates, Property Tax, online tenders, Water meter bill , besides a citizen complaints registration and complaint status system. The present research paper concentrates on the concept of e-governance, initiatives of implementation of e-governance services and the current status of e-governance in and around Pune city. As well as it mainly focuses on how e-governance is a powerful tool for delivering different services at citizen¡¯s doorstep and how implementation of e-governance helps to reduce the work load and increase the efficiency of employees & Speed up the Processes. The purpose of the study is to find out awareness of citizens about e-governance & is it really useful to them to interact with PMC for their needs? and for the ease of administrative work?
