%X Este artigo prop e uma an¨¢lise sociol¨®gica acerca da hist¨®ria e constru  o da Catedral de Maring¨¢. Ela ¨¦ um s¨ªmbolo do poder da Igreja Cat¨®lica, mas, sua constru  o n o est¨¢ dissociada das estrat¨¦gias pol¨ªticas e dos interesses locais. Este texto pretendeanalisar a Catedral de Maring¨¢ em tr¨ºs aspectos fundamentais: na combina  o entre valores e ide¨¢rio institucional cat¨®lico com a modernidade, vis¨ªvel na pr¨®pria arquitetura; na relevancia do projeto de constru  o para os interesses locais; e no seu papel para trajet¨®ria de Dom Jaime Luiz Coelho, o principal articulador da obra. A an¨¢lise de documentos e eventos, relacionados ¨¤ constru  o do pr¨¦dio, revelam uma s¨¦rie de rela  es e articula  es que contribuem para a compreens o do significado da Catedral, n o s¨® para a Igreja, como tamb¨¦m, para a cidade de Maring¨¢. This article proposes a sociological analysis of the history and construction of the Maring¨¢ Cathedral. It is a symbol of the power of the Catholic Church, but its construction is not unrelated to political strategies and local interests. This paper intends to analyze the cathedral in three aspects: the combination of Catholic values and institutional ideals and modernity, visible in the architecture itself; the relevance of the construction project forlocal interests; and its role in the trajectory of Dom Jaime Luiz Coelho, the main articulator of the work. The analysis of documents and events related to the construction of the building shows a series of relationships and discussions that contribute to the understandingof the meaning of the cathedral, not only for the Church, but also for the city of Maring¨¢.
