%X Cet article s¡¯int¨¦resse ¨¤ la fonction de l¡¯image du monument naturel dans les repr¨¦sentations de l¡¯Ouest au xixe si¨¨cle, et plus particuli¨¨rement dans trois r¨¦cits de voyages, A Tour on the Prairies de Washington Irving, Roughing It de Mark Twain et Specimen Days de Walt Whitman. Ic ne des vieilles nations europ¨¦ennes, le monument est paradoxalement omnipr¨¦sent dans les repr¨¦sentations de l¡¯espace sauvage et y fait figure de paradigme structurant. Il s¡¯agit d¡¯analyser conjointement les enjeux esth¨¦tiques et politiques de sa transposition sur le sol am¨¦ricain. On montrera ainsi comment ce motif autour duquel se construit le paysage de l¡¯Ouest se fait aussi incarnation de la d¨¦mocratie am¨¦ricaine et, simultan¨¦ment, principe d¡¯¨¦criture. This article deals with the image of the natural monument and considers its function in 19th-century representations of the West, especially in three travel narratives¡ªA Tour on the Prairies by Washington Irving, Roughing It by Mark Twain and Specimen Days by Walt Whitman. An emblem of the old European nations, the monument is paradoxically omnipresent in the representations of the Western wilderness and appears as a structuring paradigm. The purpose of this reflexion is to analyse jointly the aesthetic and political implications of its transposition onto the American soil. Indeed, this motive on which the construction of the Western landscape is based also appears as the embodiment of American democracy while defining a writing principle.
