%X This paper is an analysis of the discursive relevance of the reader¡¯s identification in ¡°letter to the editor¡± in the Magazine Newsweek. To accomplish the analysis, it was used the support of the following authors: Lozano et al. (2002), Maingueneau (2001), Orlandi (2003) and Fairclough (2003). It was quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed 122 letters send to Newsweek along the lapse of time between July and December of 2002. It was discovered that the reader¡¯s identification holds a very close relation to the argumentative-discursive strategies found in the body of each letter, whose objective, mostly, is to balance the power relations between the reader-writer and the editor.
