%X La retina es un tejido fundamental en el ¨®rgano de la visi¨®n.En este art¨ªculo hacemos una revisi¨®n sobre la anatom¨ªa yfisiolog¨ªa de esta estructura as¨ª como sobre las principalespatolog¨ªas que la pueden afectar, entre ellas: despren-dimiento de retina, retinopat¨ªa diab¨¦tica y la enfermedadmacular relacionada con la edad. Aunque actualmentecontamos con t¨¦cnicas m¨¦dicas y quir¨²rgicas seguras yefectivas para el manejo de estas patolog¨ªas, a¨²nrepresentan un reto para la ciencia m¨¦dica, y en estadosavanzados comprometen seriamente la funci¨®n visual, porello es de gran importancia que el m¨¦dico general tengaclaros los conceptos b¨¢sicos sobre el diagn¨®stico de estasenfermedades, para realizar una remisi¨®n adecuada y as¨ª poder evitar al m¨¢ximo secuelas visuales en el paciente. En este art¨ªculo revisamos libros de texto reconocidos y empleando MEDLINE, algunos art¨ªculos representativos sobre este tema, para mostrar un panorama general del estado actual, cl¨ªnico e investigativo, del diagn¨®stico y tratamientode las enfermedades m¨¢s importantes que afectan la retina y el v¨ªtreo. ______________________________________________________________________The retina is a fundamental tissue of the visual organ. In this article we make a review of the anatomy and physiology of this structure as well as the main pathologies that may affect it like: retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and age related macular degeneration. Although currently there are safe medical and surgical alternatives for the management of these diseases, they still represent a challenge for the medical science, and in advanced stagesthey seriously compromise visual function. For this reason it is of vital importance that the primary care physician has clear concepts about the diagnosis of these diseases, to perform an adequate referral, avoiding visual sequelae as much as possible. In this article we reviewed recognized textbooks and using MEDLINE we found some representative articles on this subject. We provide anoverview of the current clinical and research status on the diagnosis and treatment of the most important diseases affecting retina and vitreous.
