%X Obesity is becoming a more and more frequentdisease in the world, including Poland, and is oftencalled the epidemic of the 21st century. Abundantaccumulation of fatty tissue leads to many metabolicdisturbances, such as diabetes, hyperlipidaemia andcardiovascular system diseases, the elements ofmetabolic syndrome. Since surgical treatment of morbidobesity (> 40 kg/m2) was shown to cause not onlya long-term, significant decrease in body mass, butalso partial or complete regression of comorbiditiesand reduction in mortality by 30%, surgery of obesityor bariatric surgery has been one of the most dynamicallydeveloping fields of interventional medicine.
