%X This paper discusses evolution, problems and prospects of the Gender Mainstreaming approach. The historical context of movements for womenĄŻs advancement, and the changing paradigms of role of state towards achievement of greater gender equality are examined. This is followed by identification of the conceptual and practical challenges impeding successful implementation of the Gender Mainstreaming approach. Finally, the advantages of this approach are noted and issues associated with adoption of this strategy by government agencies are highlighted.
