%T The quality of rabbinic leadership in the generation of expulsi¨®n

%X Not a few Jewish historians have strongly criticized the spiritual and intellectual leaders of Spanish Jewry in the years leading up to the expulsion of 1492, as expressed by the following statement in a 1995 academic book by Norman Roth: ¡°An important characteristic of fi fteenthcentury Spanish Jewry was the almost complete lack of leadership¡±. This article will challenge some of the underlying assumptions of this claim, especially pertaining to the failure of these leaders to foresee and prevent the expulsion, and the charge of intellectual mediocrity in the areas of Jewish law, philosophy and Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism). Passing briefly over the best-known Jewish leader of the generation, Don Isaac Abravanel, about whom much has been written, the second part of the article will focus on Rabbi Isaac Aboab, based largely on material from his sermons, much of which remains in unpublished manuscripts. Algunos historiadores jud¨ªos han criticado duramente los l¨ªderes espirituales e intelectuales de los sefard¨ªes en los a os previos a la expulsi¨®n de 1492, como pone de manifiesto Norman Roth en una publicaci¨®n de 1995: ¡°Una caracter¨ªstica importante de los sefard¨ªes del siglo XV fue la falta casi total de liderazgo¡±. Con el fi n de cuestionar algunos de los presupuestos subyacentes, este art¨ªculo pone en tela de juicio algunas de las asunciones fundamentales de esta afirmaci¨®n, especialmente en lo que respecta al supuesto fracaso de esos l¨ªderes en prever y prevenir la expulsi¨®n, y a la acusaci¨®n de mediocridad intelectual en los ¨¢mbitos de la ley, la filosof¨ªa y la c¨¢bala jud¨ªas. Despu¨¦s de un breve acercamiento al l¨ªder jud¨ªo m¨¢s conocido de esa generaci¨®n, Don Isaac Abravanel, sobre quien ya se ha escrito mucho, la segunda parte del art¨ªculo se centra en el rab¨ª Isaac Aboab, bas¨¢ndose sobre todo en sus sermones, muchos de los cuales proceden de manuscritos todav¨ªa sin publicar.
