%0 Journal Article %T An Example of Democracy Education in Primary Schools: School Student Councils (Case of Elaz City) %A Mehmet Nuri G£¿MLEKS£¿Z %A Ay£¿e ¨¹lk¨¹ KAN %A Elif C¨¹RO %J Ondokuz May£¿s University Journal of Education %D 2010 %I Ondokuz May?s University %X The aim of this descriptive study is to determine the opinions of primary schoolteachers and members of student councils about the efficiency level of the student councils inprimary schools. For the purpose of the study, a 20-item Likert-type scale was developed bythe researchers. Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated to be .94.245 students and 199 primary school teachers were included in the study. Independent groupsT-test, One way Anova and LSD tests were utilized to analyze the data. Both the teachers¡¯and the students¡¯ views were evaluated in terms of socio-economic levels of the schools. Theresults of the study indicated that both the teachers and the students found student council activities effective and useful. Findings also revealed that teachers and students had positiveopinions toward student councils.
