%X En mettant fin aux op¨¦rations militaires, la pacification de l¡¯hiver 1800 disqualifie par le fait m¨ºme en actes de brigandage les violences commises par les chouans insoumis. Lecture sommaire et tendancieuse sans doute mais qui a ¨¦t¨¦ avalis¨¦e par la configuration historiographique : les sp¨¦cialistes de la police napol¨¦onienne prennent alors le relais des historiens de la guerre civile. Un tel compartimentage, redoubl¨¦ par la scission op¨¦r¨¦e entre Paris et l¡¯Ouest, alt¨¨re la compr¨¦hension de la chouannerie en cr¨¦ant un hiatus dans ses modes d¡¯action. C¡¯est en effet masquer une continuit¨¦ r¨¦elle entre les attentats contre Bonaparte et l¡¯usage d¨¦lib¨¦r¨¦ de la terreur dans les d¨¦partements de l¡¯Ouest par des bandes s¡¯employant ¨¤ d¨¦stabiliser l¡¯ordre r¨¦publicain et ¨¤ saboter le processus de r¨¦conciliation au moyen d¡¯assassinats publics et d¡¯enl¨¨vements spectaculaires lors des p¨¦riodes dites d¡¯entre-chouannage ou de chouannerie ¨¤ volont¨¦. Mettre en ¨¦vidence cette strat¨¦gie d¡¯intimidation ¨¦claire d¡¯un jour nouveau l¡¯affaire de la Machine infernale, rue Nicaise le 3 Niv se an 9, et la conspiration de l¡¯an 12 : pour s¡¯en convaincre, il n¡¯est qu¡¯¨¤ envisager l¡¯itin¨¦raire de leurs auteurs, qui sauront toutefois emprunter in fine le mode op¨¦ratoire projet¨¦ par les jacobins. By ending the military operations, the pacification of the winter 1800 disqualifies in acts of robbery the violence committed by the rebellious Chouans. Not doubt it is a ummary and biased reading but it was endorsed by the historiographical configuration: specialists of the Napoleonic police relaying historians of the civil war. Such a compartmentalization, doubled by the split operated between Paris and the West, alters the understanding of the revolt of the Chouans by creating a hiatus in its modes of action. It is indeed to mask a real continuity between attempts against Bonaparte and the deliberated use of terror in the western departments intending to destabilize the republican order and to sabotage the process of reconciliation by means of public murders and spectacular kidnappings during the so-called periods of ¡°chouannerie ¨¤ volont¨¦¡± (at will). To remind this strategy of intimidation sheds new light on two famous affairs: the ¡°Infernal Machine¡± of the Saint-Nicaise street and the Cadoudal conspiracy.
