%X Depuis pr¨¨s de 40 ans, dans les massifs montagneux des Alpes fran aises du Nord, des programmes de recherche ont renouvel¨¦ nos connaissances sur les occupations humaines de la Pr¨¦histoire r¨¦cente. Des gisements ont livr¨¦ des s¨¦quences chrono-culturelles et naturelles de r¨¦f¨¦rence. Bien cal¨¦es chronologiquement, elles autorisent une bonne approche des ¨¦volutions culturelles de la fin du Pal¨¦olithique sup¨¦rieur au N¨¦olithique, ainsi que bioclimatiques, du Dryas ancien ¨¤ l¡¯Atlantique. Pour r¨¦pondre ¨¤ des probl¨¦matiques de circulation et d¡¯occupation des territoires, des prospections th¨¦matiques ont ¨¦t¨¦ mises en  uvre par des chercheurs d¡¯horizons diff¨¦rents. Dans une premi¨¨re partie sont abord¨¦s les questions touchant ¨¤ la chronologie et au pal¨¦oenvironnement r¨¦v¨¦l¨¦ notamment par les ¨¦tudes sur le monde animal et le milieu v¨¦g¨¦tal. Les ¨¦pisodes du peuplement pr¨¦historique sont pr¨¦sent¨¦s dans une seconde partie. Elle traite notamment des modalit¨¦s du passage des derniers chasseurs-cueilleurs (magdal¨¦niens, aziliens et m¨¦solithiques) aux premiers pasteurs-agriculteurs du N¨¦olithique. Dans une troisi¨¨me partie est pr¨¦sent¨¦e l¡¯¨¦volution des grands courants culturels ¨¤ l¡¯¨¦chelle des Alpes occidentales. Une carte met bien en ¨¦vidence l¡¯appropriation progressive des Alpes occidentales ¨¤ partir des r¨¦gions p¨¦riph¨¦riques. For nearly 40 years, in mountain massifs of the northern French Alps, research programs have renewed our knowledges of human occupations for late prehistory. Some sites have yielded chrono-cultural and natural sequences of reference. Chronologically fit snugly, they allow a good approach of the cultural developments during the late Upper Paleolithic to the Neolithic and of bioclimats of Oldest Dryas at the Atlantic. To answer the problems of circulation and occupation of the territories, thematic surveys were carried out by researchers from different backgrounds.In the first part are discussed the issues of chronology and palaeoenvironment revealed in particular by studies of animal associations and of vegetal environments.The episodes of prehistoric settlement are presented in a second part. It discusses the terms of the transition from last hunter-gatherers (Magdalenian, Azilian and Mesolithic) to first agro-pastoralists in the Neolithic.In the third part is presented the evolution of major cultural trends across the Western Alps. A map clearly shows the progressive appropriation of the Western Alps from the peripheral regions.
