%X Le 14 juillet 1948, ¨¤ la nouvelle de l¡¯attentat contre Palmiro Togliatti, le secr¨¦taire g¨¦n¨¦ral du Parti communiste italien, se d¨¦clenche de mani¨¨re spontan¨¦e une gr¨¨ve g¨¦n¨¦rale illimit¨¦e tandis que l¡¯Italie se couvre de barricades. Le calme ne revient que le 16 juillet, alors que de l¡¯autre c t¨¦ des Alpes, le cycliste Gino Bartali s¡¯appr¨ºte ¨¤ remporter le Tour de France. D¨¨s lors d¨¦bute un autre combat, historiographique celui-l¨¤, autour de l¡¯interpr¨¦tation de cet ¨¦v¨¦nement exceptionnel. ¨¤ gauche, le d¨¦bat porte sur la question de savoir s¡¯il s¡¯agissait d¡¯une authentique tentative insurrectionnelle ou bien d¡¯une explosion de col¨¨re et d¡¯indignation sans perspective politique pr¨¦cise. Du c t¨¦ catholique s¡¯¨¦labore en contrepoint le mythe des vertus pacificatrices d¡¯une victoire sportive, capable de d¨¦tourner la masse des Italiens des sir¨¨nes d¨¦magogiques d¡¯un Parti communiste pr¨¦sent¨¦ ainsi comme un corps ¨¦tranger ¨¤ la soci¨¦t¨¦ italienne. July 14th, 1948, the news of the attempt against Palmiro Togliatti, the General Secretary of the Italian communist Party, start a spontaneous and unlimited general strike whereas Italy covers itself with barricades. The peace returns only on July 16th, while on the other side of the Alps, the cyclist Gino Bartali is going to win the Tour de France. From then on, another fight, historiographical, begins, around the interpretation of this exceptional event. On the left, the debate is about how much it was an authentic insurrectionary attempt or an outburst of anger and indignation without precise political prospect. On the catholic side, in counterpoint, it¡¯s the myth of the pacificatory virtues of a sports victory, capable of diverting the mass of the Italians from the demagogic sirens of a communist party presented so as a foreign body to the Italian society.
