Con u et repr¨¦sent¨¦ pendant que la R¨¦publique fran aise cherchait ¨¤ s¡¯affirmer grace ¨¤ sa politique la que, l¡¯ouvrage refl¨¨te les d¨¦bats contemporains sur le divorce. Le propos id¨¦ologique du livret est cependant nuanc¨¦ par les formes musico-dramatiques. A late example of French grand opera, Saint-Sa ns¡¯ Henri VIII (1883), a setting of the libretto by L¨¦once D¨¦troyat and Armand Silvestre draws from Shakespeare¡¯s and Fletcher¡¯s Henry VIII as well as Calder¨®n de la Bark¡¯s La Cisma de Inglaterra. Composed and first performed when the French Republic was trying to assert itself through its policy of separating church and state policy, the opera reflected the contemporary debate on divorce.
