%X The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, vitally important to China's political and economic stability, is pushing for an independent "East Turkestan," while China is fighting it. This article explores the legal structure, underlying agenda, and implications of "autonomy" in Xinjiang, but concludes that true autonomy is not an option.
