Chez les Beti du Cameroun, un homme de cons¨¦quence se reconna t, entre autres choses, par son aptitude ¨¤ entretenir un foyer polygame. En retra ant la carri¨¨re matrimoniale du p¨¨re de famille de la maison o¨´ je r¨¦sidais, les rapports conflictuels entre ses ¨¦pouses ainsi que mes propres relations avec elles ¡ª dont notamment une intervention d¨¦sastreuse que j¡¯ai essay¨¦ de r¨¦parer treize ans plus tard ¡ª, je tente dans cet article de faire ressortir ¨¤ la fois la pr¨¦carit¨¦ de l¡¯entente polygyne et la place essentielle qu¡¯occupe cette instabilit¨¦ dans le cycle de d¨¦veloppement des groupes domestiques. The wives of my father: polygamy in Beti country. Among the Beti of Cameroon, one way of recognising a man of importance is by his ability to maintain a polygamous household. By retracing the matrimonial career of the father of the family I was staying with, the antagonistic relations between the wives, and my own relations with them - including one disastrous intervention that I tried to repair thirteen years later -, this article aims to bring to light both the precarious nature of the polygynous concord and the important role this instability plays in the development cycle of domestic groups.
