%X A ideia da exist那ncia de uma tend那ncia dos organismos ao progressivo aumento de complexidade da organiza  o corporal j芍 se fazia presente em tempos anteriores ao evolucionismo. Com a aceita  o das teorias evolutivas, v芍rios naturalistas, e especialmente aqueles que trabalhavam com f車sseis, passaram a defender a ocorr那ncia de tal tend那ncia no processo evolutivo. Essa nova forma de abordar a ideia de progresso na natureza recebeu v芍rias interpreta  es at谷 o momento do surgimento da s赤ntese evolutiva moderna, que pouco espa o deixou para a exist那ncia de outro elemento orientador da evolu  o, que n o fosse aquele proposto por Darwin. The idea that there is a tendency of organisms towards a progressive increase of complexity of bodily organization was already present before the rise of evolutionism. With the acceptance of evolutionary theories, many naturalists, especially those working with fossils, embraced the occurrence of such a tendency in the evolutionary process. This new way of approaching the idea of progress in nature received various interpretations up to the time of the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis, which left little room for the existence of another guiding element of evolution different from the one proposed by Darwin.
