Conscious sedation is known to improve the comfort of the patients during procedures under local anesthesia however its effect on postoperative comfort of the patient is not known. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of conscious sedation on the postoperative pain and edema and compare with surgeries performed under local anesthesia and analyze the numerical data with statistics. Materials and Methods: Forthy systemically healthy patients underwent to a surgical removal of an impacted mandibular third molar between the ages 18-36 (mean 24.4) and they were divided into 2 groups. First group¡¯s operations were performed with conscious sedation and local anesthesia (Group A). The second group¡¯s operations performed (Group B) only with local anesthesia. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) of pain was measured at 6th, 12th and 24th hours and edema was measured at 48th hour within the randomized, double-blind study design, Results: Edema was measured to be statistically more in patients that underwent the surgical procedures under only local anesthesia (p<0,05) (p=0,00). The VAS measurements of patients that underwent the the surgical procedures under conscious sedation at 12th and 24th hour were significantly less than the patients that only had local anesthesia during surgery (p<0,05) (p=0,036) . Conclusions: Conscious sedation is considered as a safe method for keeping the patient discomfort to be an acceptable level during and after the surgical removal of 3rd molars.
