%0 Journal Article %T CLUPEA HARENGUS MEMBRAS: ABOUT THE ETYMOLOGY OF A CERTAIN FISH NAME IN ESTONIAN, LATVIAN AND LIVONIAN %A Udo Uibo %J Eesti ja soome-ugri keeleteaduse ajakiri %D 2012 %I University of Tartu %X In this article, the names of Clupea harengus membras will be considered in Estonian, (Salaca) Livonian and Latvian (respectively r im, re¨½ and re e ¡®Baltic herring¡¯). It will be shown that the source of all of these words is the Estonian-Swedish str mg (str ¦Çg), or its preceding word shape *str img. The Latvian re e is borrowed from Estonian-Swedish through Salaca Livonian.
