%X Le monde de la g¨¦ographie fran aise a r¨¦cemment vu ressurgir une notion vieille de deux d¨¦cennies et peu usit¨¦e, celle d¡¯antimonde. Pour Roger Brunet, son cr¨¦ateur, l¡¯antimonde est   cette partie du Monde mal connue et qui tient ¨¤ le rester, qui se pr¨¦sente ¨¤ la fois comme le n¨¦gatif du monde et comme son double indispensable  . Le terme fait certes figure de paradoxe pour la g¨¦ographie puisque celle-ci a justement le monde et ses r¨¦alit¨¦s pour objet d¡¯¨¦tude et non son contraire suppos¨¦ ou ce qui lui serait oppos¨¦. Mais la notion souffre avant tout d¡¯une d¨¦finition pour le moins vague qui la rend non op¨¦ratoire pour d¨¦crire les r¨¦alit¨¦s sociales, politiques, ¨¦conomiques et bien s r spatiales qu¡¯elle pr¨¦tend d¨¦signer. En recourant ¨¤ la mod¨¦lisation de l¡¯espace afin d¡¯en d¨¦chiffrer l¡¯extr¨ºme complexit¨¦ et d¡¯identifier les causes et les logiques qui participent de cette complexit¨¦, Brunet simplifie le monde ¨¤ outrance. Ainsi, le probl¨¨me principal pos¨¦ par la notion d¡¯antimonde r¨¦side dans l¡¯¨¦cart qui la s¨¦pare de la r¨¦alit¨¦ qu¡¯elle entend d¨¦signer et dans ce qu¡¯elle implique en termes de repr¨¦sentation et de compr¨¦hension du monde dans ce qu¡¯il a ¨¤ priori de plus r¨¦pr¨¦hensible ou de plus marginal. Loin d¡¯avoir ¨¦t¨¦ d¨¦finie de mani¨¨re satisfaisante et convaincante, la notion d¡¯antimonde n¡¯a pas non plus ¨¦t¨¦ abord¨¦e ou ¨¦valu¨¦e par son auteur au regard d¡¯autres notions qui auraient pourtant pu aider ¨¤ sa construction. In fine, l¡¯antimonde n¡¯est-il pas davantage la terra incognita de la g¨¦ographie que celle du monde ? Recently, antimonde (¡°antiworld¡±) a rarely used twenty-year-old notion has reemerged in the world of French geography. Roger Brunet, who first resorted to the notion within that discipline, defines it as ¡°this part of the World that is ill-known and wishes to remain that way, which presents itself as the negative of the world and its indispensable double¡±. The use of the notion is rather paradoxical in geography for that science¡¯s subject of study is the world and its phenomenon and not its alleged opposite. However, the notion mostly suffers from a vague definition that makes it ineffective to describe the social, political, economic and, of course, spatial phenomenon that it supposedly refers to. By resorting to spatial modeling in order to decipher the world¡¯s complexity and its underlying causes and mechanisms, Brunet ends up oversimplifying the realities of the world. The main problem is that the notion of antimonde is far removed from the reality that it aims to describe. Another problem is what the notion implies in terms of representation
