%X Background: Illness coping styles are essential variables that can both hinder or facilitate adherence to therapy, psychological wellbeing and overall life quality of patients with head and neck cancer. Objective: To determine illness coping styles in patients with head and neck cancer. Method: Descriptive study of a total of 30 patients selected by systematic random sampling, which were treated at the Celestino Hern芍ndez Robau University Hospital of Santa Clara, from November 2007 to May 2008. Among these patients, 15 were newly diagnosed and in pre-treatment stage, while 15 were in control stage of the disease. Patients were assessed qualitatively and quantitatively, by applying the illness coping styles questionnaire and psychological interview. The variables considered were: coping styles, risk factors, interpersonal relationships, self-assessment, life assessment, age, sex, educational level, marital status and employment status. Results: Among patients in the diagnostic stage, there was a tendency to express two basic coping styles: optimistic denial and affection distraction. However, in the group at control stage, predominant coping style was relevant information. Conclusions: The study identified the main illness coping styles in patients with head and neck cancer, with results different from those found by other authors. Fundamento: Los estilos de afrontamiento a la enfermedad son variables indispensables que pueden tanto entorpecer como facilitar la adherencia a la terap谷utica, el bienestar psicol車gico y la calidad de vida en general de los pacientes con c芍ncer de cabeza y cuello. Objetivo: Determinar los estilos de afrontamiento a la enfermedad en pacientes con c芍ncer de cabeza y cuello. M谷todo: Estudio descriptivo, de un total de 30 pacientes seleccionados mediante un muestreo sistem芍tico aleatorio, los cuales fueron atendidos en el Hospital Universitario Celestino Hern芍ndez Robau, de Santa Clara, desde noviembre del 2007 hasta mayo del 2008. De ellos, 15 estaban reci谷n diagnosticados y previos al tratamiento, y 15 en etapa de control de la enfermedad. Los pacientes fueron evaluados cualitativa y cuantitativamente, mediante la aplicaci車n del cuestionario de estilos de afrontamiento a la enfermedad y la entrevista psicol車gica. Se consideraron como variables: estilos de afrontamiento, factores de riesgo, relaciones interpersonales, autovaloraci車n, valoraci車n de la vida, edad, sexo, nivel de escolaridad, estado civil y estado laboral.
