%X Fundamento: las pr車tesis dentales constituyen una alternativa al perderse los dientes, pero no est芍n exentas de provocar da os, que junto a la susceptibilidad de los tejidos, provocada por el envejecimiento e inadecuados estilos de vida, pueden llevar a la aparici車n de lesiones bucales. Objetivo: describir las caracter赤sticas de pacientes portadores de pr車tesis totales y su relaci車n con las lesiones bucales. M谷todos: estudio descriptivo, con 93 ancianos institucionalizados portadores de pr車tesis total. Se utilizaron las pruebas de chi cuadrado y el riesgo relativo para determinar la asociaci車n entre las variables: edad, sexo, higiene, estado de conservaci車n, tiempo y frecuencia de uso de la pr車tesis, necesidades de pr車tesis, tipo de lesi車n, localizaci車n, h芍bito de fumar, enfermedades sist谷micas y medicamentos empleados. Resultados: el 78,5 % de los ancianos present車 lesiones relacionadas con el uso de la pr車tesis. La estomatitis subpr車tesis fue la lesi車n m芍s frecuente. La presencia de lesiones bucales fue significativa en aquellos con 80 a os y m芍s (100 %). El 95,8 % ten赤an pr車tesis deterioradas, y en la totalidad de ellos, las pr車tesis ten赤an 21 a os y m芍s de uso. El riesgo de desarrollar lesiones fue 2,98 veces superior en aquellos con una higiene bucal deficiente. El 100 % de los ancianos diab谷ticos y an谷micos presentaron lesiones. Conclusiones: las lesiones bucales estuvieron muy relacionadas con los factores locales: estado de conservaci車n, higiene, tiempo de uso de las pr車tesis; y con factores generales como: incremento de la edad, enfermedades sist谷micas y uso de medicamentos para su tratamiento. Background: Prosthetics or dentures are an alternative to missing teeth. Nevertheless, they carry the risk of producing certain damage that, along with the susceptibility of the tissues caused by aging and inadequate lifestyles, can lead to the development of oral lesions. Objective: To describe the characteristics of patients with dentures and its relation to oral lesions. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted with 93 institutionalized elderly using total prosthetics. We used chi square tests and relative risk to determine the association between variables: patient＊s age, sex and oral hygiene; denture＊s preservation, time and frequency of use and needs of rehabilitation; type and location of lesion, smoking habit, systemic diseases and medication used.
