%X Many of the pronunciation errors in the English (L2) of native Spanish speakers (L1) are due to the transfer of features from the Spanish phonological system (Gonz¨¢lez & Romero 2001, Chela-Flores, B. 1996). The pronunciation of coda alveolar fricatives represents one of the major difficulties for Spanish speakers learning English, since the inventory and the distribution of such phonemes differ in both languages. In English there are two alveolar fricative phonemes (/s/ and /z/), whereas in Spanish there is only one (/s/), with three allophonic variations ([s], [h] and  ). This paper describes the realizations of coda alveolar fricatives in the English of Venezuelan Spanish speakers at a basic level. The sample consisted of 25 students from Universidad Sim¨®n Bol¨ªvar. Two reading tests were administered: one with words in isolation and the other with the same words within a sentence. Results provided evidence for the transfer of the Spanish phonological rules of /s/ and /z/-glotalization, /z/-devoicing, and /s/ and /z/-deletion. Muchos de los errores de pronunciaci¨®n en el ingl¨¦s (L2) de hablantes del espa ol (L1) se deben a la transferencia de rasgos del sistema fonol¨®gico del espa ol al ingl¨¦s (Gonz¨¢lez & Romero 2001, Chela-Flores, B. 1996). Entre las dificultades que enfrentan los hablantes del espa ol, aprendices del ingl¨¦s, se destaca la pronunciaci¨®n de las consonantes fricativas alveolares en la coda sil¨¢bica, pues, tanto el inventario como la distribuci¨®n de dichos fonemas, difieren en ambas lenguas. En el ingl¨¦s existen dos fonemas fricativos alveolares (/s/ y /z/), mientras que en el espa ol de Venezuela s¨®lo hay uno (/s/), con tres variantes alof¨®nicas ([s], [h] y  ). En este trabajo se describen las realizaciones de las consonantes fricativas alveolares en la coda sil¨¢bica en el ingl¨¦s de hispanohablantes venezolanos, pertenecientes al nivel b¨¢sico. La muestra estuvo conformada por 25 estudiantes de la Universidad Sim¨®n Bol¨ªvar, a quienes se les aplic¨® dos tipos de instrumento de lectura que conten¨ªan los fonemas /s/ y /z/ en la coda sil¨¢bica: uno de palabras aisladas y el otro con las mismas palabras en contexto oracional. Los errores cometidos evidenciaron la transferencia de las reglas fonol¨®gicas del espa ol: la glotalizaci¨®n ([h]) de /s/ y /z/, el ensordecimiento de /z/ y la elisi¨®n.
