%X Se propone que el arte rupestre fue un sistema de registro y comunicaci¨®n andino que continu¨® en uso, con adaptaciones y cambios, durante el per¨ªodo colonial. Se pretende demostrar que, a pesar de algunos casos puntuales, el arte rupestre no era percibido por los espa oles como un sistema activo que permitiera expresar y hacer circular im¨¢genes, significados y pensamientos. Fue la ausencia de una mirada colonizadora y, por ende, represiva, la que permiti¨® que funcionara al margen de los sistemas europeos, en especial de la escritura, precisamente el sistema impuesto por los espa oles para los mismos fines. Thepaperproposes that rock art was a system used for recording and communicating in the Andes that continued in use, with some adaptations and changes, dur¨ªng the colonialperiod. It attempts to demonstrate that, except ¨ªn special cases, rock art was not perceived by the Spaniards as an active system that enabled the express¨ªon and c¨ªrculat¨ªon of ¨ªmages, mean¨ªng and thoughts. It was the absence of a colonial-and therefore repressive-perspective that enabled the very system imposed by the Spanishfor those aims, to operate outside ofthe traditional European systems, especially written ones.
