If Jean-Paul Brodeur¡¯s notoriety was mostly due to his work on police, his fascination for another field, namely extreme forms of violence like genocide and crimes against humanity, remained less known form the public. This article is an extension of a dialogue Jean-Paul and I had on the concept of banality of evil, such as developed by Hannah Arendt. In particular, and based on the Yugoslav and Rwandan contexts, I suggest an expansion of the concept¡¯s application, yet this time not so much on civil servants and bureaucrats, who constituted Arendt¡¯s center of interest while focusing on the Holocaust, but rather on field executioners. This preliminary insight reveals that the notion of banality of evil might be disaggregated into four subcategories that characterize executioners¡¯ participation in mass violence, namely a banality of similitude, of familiarity, of idea and of repetition. %K banality of evil %K crimes against humanity %K former Yugoslavia %K genocide %K Hannah Arendt %K Rwanda %K g¨¦nocide %K Rwanda %K Jean-Paul Brodeur %K banalit¨¦ du mal %K crime contre l¡¯humanit¨¦ %K ex-Yougoslavie %K Hannah Arendt %U http://champpenal.revues.org/8347
