The purpose of this article is to analyse women's access to academy as students and academicians, the processes of women's academic career advancement and whether there is a gender-based segregation in the fields of their academic studies. The data regarding the students and academicians used in the study is provided by the Council of Higher Education (Y£¿K) and Turkish Statistical Institute (TU£¿K). The data reveal that gender equality is relatively approached in access to higher education as 46 percent of students in higher education is consisted of women; yet when considering the academic advancement from associate degree program to doctoral education, it is observed that gender inequalities increase against women. Data obtained in Turkey, parallel with the world statistics, indicate a vertical segregation in academy with 44 percent of female academicians. The fields of study that are predominated by women academicians are language and literature and these fields are followed by health sciences, social sciences, art and applied social sciences respectively. Men, on the other hand, prefer technical sciences, agriculture and forestry, mathematics and physical sciences which are economically more advantageous. In addition to horizontal segregation in academy, women experience a gender-based vertical segregation in their academic careers due to various socio-cultural factors as well. While the number of women academicians who begin an academic career as research assistants is 50% ,just like their counterparts, the percentage of women who reach the rank of professor drops to 30 percent with a 20 percent loss like a leaky pipeline. However, the main gender-based problem in academy is that female representation in academic administration is highly lower compared to male representation %K Toplumsal Cinsiyet %K Akademi %K Yatay Ayr£¿£¿ma %K Dikey Ayr£¿£¿ma %U http://dergipark.org.tr/ktc/issue/37170/425631
