%0 Journal Article %T AN EXAMINATION OF SHARED READING BEHAVIORS OF PRESCHOOLERS¡¯ MOTHERS IN RELATION TO THEIR PARENTAL ATTITUDES %A Aysel T¨¹FEK£¿£¿ AKCAN %A M¨¹berra ARICI %J - %D 2018 %X The purpose of the study is to examine mothers¡¯ shared story book reading behaviors at home with their children in relation to their parental attitudes. A correlational survey design is used in the study and the sample is composed of 436 mothers of 4- and 5-year-old children attending preschools in £¿stanbul. The data were collected using the Parental Attitude Scale and Child-Parent Shared Reading Activities Scale. In addition to descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis Variance Analysis, and Sperman Correlation Analysis tests were used while analyzing the data. As a result of the study, a significant relationship was found between mothers¡¯ shared book reading behaviors at home with their children and their democratic, authoritarian and overprotective parental attitudes whereas no relationship was observed with permissive parental attitude. In conclusion, it was found that the mothers receiving high scores from the sub-dimension of democratic attitude read books more frequently with their children, that they have more books for their children at home, and that they buy the first book for their children in the earlier ages of their children.
