%0 Journal Article %T The Story of Sitting Furniture in Ancient Period and The Reflections of Historical Process %A Deniz Demirarslan %J - %D 2019 %X Today, sitting posture has an important place in the creation of ergonomic living spaces. In order to minimize the force of gravity on its body while carrying out some actions necessary to sustain life, human beings exhibit various postures, especially sitting. That is why; the seating furniture needed for many actions were developed according to the nature of the action, and naturally, according to the traditions of the societies, their lifestyles, the technological possibilities of the age, and even the gender, age and social status of individuals. However, the greatest improvement in the living furniture is seen in the ancient periods of Egypt, Aegean- Greek and Roman civilizations. In these civilizations, it is seen that furniture is ergonomically developed and diversified. Thrones, chairs and seats were used by kings and nobles; stools were furniture used by everyone. Sitting furniture has also provided the development of couch and table furniture. The development of sitting furniture in these civilizations has been the basis for the development of ergonomic sitting furniture in the Western world, and the features of this furniture are reflected in today's furniture design. Especially, the basic form, ergonomic, stylistic and construction features of sitting furniture and other many features have come from the antique sitting furniture to the present day.
