Thiamine deficiency affects cardiovascular and nervous systems. Wernicke encephalopathy is characterized by oculomotor abnormalities, ataxia and cognitive deterioration caused by thiamine deficiency. It is most commonly observed in chronic alcoholics. It may also occur in patients who receive long-term total parenteral nutrition.
