%X The American textbook <i>Science Primers</i>: <i>Physics</i> was translated into Chinese in the late Qing Dynasty and it had two Chinese
translations. One is <i>Gezhi <span>Qimeng</span></i><span>:<i> Gewu Xue</i> translated jointly by Young
John Allen and Zheng C</span>hangyan, and the other is <i>Xixue Qimeng Shiliu Zhong</i>:<i> Gezhi Zhixue Qimeng</i> rendered by Joseph Edkins. The paratext provides
information about background, purpose and process of translation, and reflects
translator¡¯s motivation and translation style, which is a significant basis for
comprehending of the translation, publication and acceptance of the Chinese
translations of <i>Science Primers</i>:<i> Physics</i>.
