complex facts, leading to the belief that their wisdom was limited. This is in
the majority of cases still true </span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">today, but
based on hundreds of years of (geo-) scientific work some older</span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\"> thoughts </span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">can now be readjusted by
combining newer geological, environmental,</span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\"> historical and philosophical clues. Facts about the development of the</span> <span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">North German Basin are used to demonstrate the
variability of geological</span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\"> systems and how these can be described by taking
dice as </span></span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">a </span><span style=\"font-family:&quot;\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">metaphor for rul</span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">ing geological
parameters. This includes all kinds of plate tectonically con</span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">trolled
basin forming processes, especially metamorphism of the lower crust </span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">due to a fixed mantle plume, basin filling
processes with their galactic and lunar </span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">overprints, basin modifying
tectonics due to internal (halokinesis, inversion) </span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">or external forces (one-sided loads at the surface due to mighty Delta
sedi</span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">ments or glacial ice sheets) and geochemical reactions as </span></span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">a </span><span style=\"font-family:&quot;\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">result of pressure </span><span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">and temperature changes in course of subsidence.
