One of the key reasons that parties join coalition governments is to share power or to advocate about policy change or policy reform. Additionally, a national catastrophe can force political parties to form an alliance. This occurs whenever there is a disagreement of some kind, a crisis involving the constitution or the succession, or a dramatic upheaval in politics. As a result, the parties decide to work together as a coalition and establish official agreements to divide administrative authority or accountability. This paper analyses the literature on coalition governments and scenarios that foreshadow a coalition government in South Africa¡¯s upcoming 2024 elections.
