Since the 17th century, a strong “Chinese wind” has blown in Europe. This Chinese wind originated in the 11th century, and was strongly promoted by Marco Polo, Saint Eduard and other adventurers and missionaries who had traveled to China. After several centuries of development, it has penetrated into all aspects of European life since the 17th century, such as daily items, home decoration, garden architecture and so on. Many Chinese-style architecture, artworks and crafts have recorded and preserved its profound traces across the European continent. The Chinese wind has directly shaped the famous Rococo style in the history of Western fashion. In Britain, Rococo Chinese style has become a unique artistic style, which has had a profound impact on the British society at that time. This article will discuss the British Rococo Chinese style in order to reveal its position and value in the history of British culture.
