In the light of latest cognitive theory of nostalgia and in-depth connection between utopia and nostalgia, this thesis interprets the major utopian communal experimentation in the 19th-centrury America and examines the evolutionary mechanisms and nostalgic construction of them, expecting to analyse the reasons for the failure of these utopian communities and American cultural ambivalence behind them. It explores how these disaffected reformers tried to build warm social bonds, interpersonal solidarity and the sense of belonging in an unfavorable reality, but ultimately failed in the progress of engaging with the dominant social discourse. In this way, it contributes to deepening the understanding of the nineteenth-century utopian communities in the United States and gets a glimpse into the values in American society and culture. %K 乌托邦,怀旧,共同体实验,美国文化价值观,个人主义
