%X biotechnology is applied to medical and agricultural research, as well as to animal production, amongst other fundamental fields for development. it is also applied to production of some kinds of food, but its utilization raises enthusiasm and mistrust and that is why it has as many supporters as detractors. this work reflects the results of research on the knowledge and opinions of the inhabitants of merida city (venezuela), as well as other agents of public opinion, about agricultural biotechnology, which makes of this one a research into people¡äs perception of science. the results are useful in order to design mechanisms of public outreach aiming to contribute to a better knowledge of science in general and of biotechnology, its scope and limitations; so that citizens may make decisions based on information about genetically modified products. this must occur at public debate level as well as in the fields of legislation, production, trade and consumption.
