%X this article analyzes the transformations of commerce in the tacna-arica region after peru£¿s independence. the most relevant aspect of this process was the massive arrival of foreign merchants, especially british, who intensified the integration of the regional economy to world-wide economic networks. moreover, the article examines the role economic actors from the colonial period, such as creole merchants and muleteers had, under the new scenario generated after peru£¿s independence.
