M. %J Ingenier¨ªa mec¨¢nica, tecnolog¨ªa y desarrollo %D 2009 %I Sociedad Mexicana de Ingenier¨ªa Mec¨¢nica %X a numerical three-dimensional study has been carried out to analyze the hydrodynamic behavior of an incompressible periodically reversing flow in a cylindrical pipeline of finite length. in order to generate the reciprocating flow were placed at the ends of the pipeline two pistons that move with a harmonic movement and in phase. the womersley number was set to 16 and the axial displacement/diameter was set to 1. the flow patterns are discussed for the accelerating and decelerating phases during the oscillating cycle. the numerical results show the generation of vortices for different phases. an interesting result found is that in the position of 185¡ã, just after the pistons reached the position of maximum displacement, the flow pattern losses the axial symmetry that had been previously developed. %K periodically reversing flow %K finite length pipeline %K womersley number %K incompressible flow. %U http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&pid=S1665-73812009000200004&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en
