%X we offer an interpretation of the verses 1556-1578 of sophocles¡¯ play oedipus at colonus corresponding to the hymn to the nether gods sung by the chorus asking for oedipus¡¯ euthanasia. four items are considered here: the structure of the hymn, the problematic identification of the deities involved, the final invocation of thanatos as a symbolic representation of the hero¡¯s death, and the eschatological ideas implied in the choice of the hymnic form for a funerary context.
