%0 Journal Article %T EL CERRO DE POTOS¨ª Y EL DIOS PACHAC¨¢MAC %A Gisbert %A Teresa %J Chungar¨¢ (Arica) %D 2010 %I Scientific Electronic Library Online %R 10.4067/S0717-73562010000100028 %X in this essay it is argued that "cerro de potosf' was hidden from the spanish conquerors because it was the region's most important huaca or sanctuary, due to the fact that it was dedicated to the god pachac¨¢mac. abundant testimonies (colonial documents) indicate that "cerro de potosf was a worshipped "apu" (mountain, se£¿or or lord), nevertheless chronicler orzans de ors¨²a y vela (1736) stated that this "apu" belonged to pachac¨¢mac, god of the underworld. a tradition collected near the salar de uyuni states the same; finally, a sacrifice in honor of pachac¨¢mac that occurred during the 16th century on the shores of lake titicaca, shows the presence of this god in the collasuyo. when the incas reached potos¨ª, they introduced worship of the sun, and when the spanish conquerors arrived, they identified the "cerro de potosf with the virgin mary which at the same time was identified with pachamama or mother earth. %K apu %K huaca %K lake titicaca %K mother earth %K collasuyo. %U http://www.scielo.cl/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&pid=S0717-73562010000100028&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en
