%X this article argues that theoretical relativism is an obstacle in current processes of theory development within communication studies. it is suggested that as a scholarly field, communication should itself be understood from a communicational perspective. a theoretical matrix is put forward indicating that communication should be considered as an explicative principle and as a practical discipline.
