Abstract:

this study refers to the artistic and literary scene in s?o paulo in the post-war era, which was a period of great transformation which made the city the epicenter of the country's cultural life. the article focuses on the actions of some businessmen who were the protagonists of a remarkable patronage, and whose performances in the fine arts, theater, and cinema are considerable known. but they also played important roles, albeit less known, in the literary press and the publishing market. i intend to reconstitute the experience of the literary supplement from diário de s. paulo, supported by assis chateubriand, and, above all, the editorial progress institute (instituto progresso editorial - ipe), a francisco matarazzo sobrinho enterprise. both the publishing house and the periodical emerged in a period of inflection of the city and were decisive elements for the process of development of its cultural sphere.
