Abstract:

the authors propose a way for structuring engineering curricula based upon competencies. the proposed scheme considers some difficulties that usually engineering colleges have to face. these colleges have tended to prioritise, in the past, an education focused on knowledge transmission, which, nevertheless, should not be eliminated in the new approach but, rather, complemented with activities in new formats. it is designed a system, or set, of competencies that can be develop through the curricula in an integrated form, thus making it easier to get the desired educational outcomes. the present approach implies curricula changes that can be achieved without traumatic institutional decisions, according to these authors` perspective. some subject distribution and new ways of teaching administration are required, however.
