Abstract:

the purpose of this study is to compare the lipid profile in native-born canines or their crosses in the colombian area of caldas and to analyze the relationship between serum lipids levels of six groups. samples of serum were collected from 156 canines, in fast state, differentiated by sex and age (32 male and 34 female under one year and 42 adult males and 48 adult females); levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured by enzymatic-colorimetric method; levels of very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were determined using the friedewald equation. results: mean ± standard deviation for total cholesterol, triglycerides and very low and low density lipoproteins cholesterol for native-born canines or their crosses in mg/dl were: 214.91±75.3; 50.01±42.5; 133.73±40.11; 10.00±8.51; 71.17±57.12; respectively. the p value for the f test lower to 0.05 (0.0379), shows statistically significant difference between the young and the adult males in the total cholesterol variable with a confidence level of 95 %; for the rest of the groups the triglycerides, the vldl cholesterol and the ldl cholesterol the differences were not significant (p > 0.05). the hdl cholesterol in young and adult canines had a value of 0.0377 in the p value of the f test demonstrating a relevant difference (p < 0.05). the results showed by the young canines particularly in males, demonstrate that those have higher total cholesterol and hdl cholesterol comparing with adults.
